NCERT Questions – 6

Give two reasons to justify—

(a) Water at room temperature is a liquid because:

Answer:
  1. Fixed volume but no fixed shape – Water takes the shape of the container it is in, a characteristic of liquids.
  2. Moderate intermolecular forces – The molecules in water are loosely packed and can flow freely, unlike solids.

Thus, water remains a liquid at room temperature (25°C).

(b) An iron almirah is a solid at room temperature because:

Answer:
  1. Fixed shape and volume – An iron almirah does not change its shape or size under normal conditions.
  2. Strong intermolecular forces – The particles in iron are tightly packed, giving it a rigid structure.

Thus, an iron almirah remains solid at room temperature.
