Suppose you drop a die at random on the rectangular region shown in Fig. 14.6. What is the probability that it will land inside the circle with diameter 1m?

 

Solution:

Find the area of the rectangle.

The area of the rectangle is simply:

Area of rectangle = Length ×  Width = 3 × 2 = 6 m2

Find the area of the circle.

The diameter of the circle is 1m, so its radius is:

Now, the area of the circle is:

Find the probability.

The probability that the die will land inside the circle is the ratio of the area of the circle to the area of the rectangle:
