Exercise 14.1, 7

It is given that in a group of 3 students, the probability of 2 students not having the same birthday is 0.992. What is the probability that the 2 students have the same birthday?

Solution:

We know the total probability of all outcomes is always 1.

So, the probability that 2 students have the same birthday is simply the complement of them not having the same birthday.

That is,

P(same birthday) = 1−P(not same birthday)

Given,

P(not same birthday) = 0.992

So,

P(same birthday) = 1 − 0.992 = 0.008
