Exercise 14.1, 25 (ii)

Which of the following arguments are correct and which are not correct? Give reasons for your answer.

(ii) If a die is thrown, there are two possible outcomesβ€”an odd number or an even number. Therefore, the probability of getting an odd number is 1/2

Solution:

When a die is thrown, the possible outcomes are:

  • Odd numbers: 1, 3, 5 (3 outcomes)
  • Even numbers: 2, 4, 6 (3 outcomes)

Since there are 6 possible outcomes in total, the probability of getting an odd number is:

3/6 = 1/2

Thus, the probability of getting an odd number is indeed 1/2
