Example 11

A missing helicopter is reported to have crashed somewhere in the rectangular region shown in Fig. 14.2. What is the probability that it crashed inside the lake shown in the figure?

Example 11 - A missing helicopter is reported to have crashed

Given:

  • Total area = 40.5 km²
  • Lake area = 7.5 km²

Steps:

  1. Write the formula for probability:P(helicopter crashed in the lake) = Lake area/Total area
  1. Substitute the given values:P = 7.5/40.5
  1. Simplify the fraction:
Multiply both the numerator and denominator by 10 to make it easier:P = 75/405
  1. Simplify the fraction:
    Both 75 and 405 can be divided by 15:P = 75 ÷ 15/405 ÷ 15 = 5/27
