Example 3

A die is thrown once.

(i) What is the probability of getting a number greater than 4?
(ii) What is the probability of getting a number less than or equal to 4?

Solution:
When we throw a die, the possible outcomes are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

(i) To get a number greater than 4, the possible outcomes are 5 and 6. There are 2 favourable outcomes.
So, the probability is:

P(greater than 4) = 2/6 = 1/3

(ii) To get a number less than or equal to 4, the possible outcomes are 1, 2, 3, and 4. There are 4 favourable outcomes.
So, the probability is:

P(less than or equal to 4) = 4/6 = 2/3
