Example 8

A box has 3 blue, 2 white, and 4 red marbles. One marble is picked at random. What is the probability that it is:

(i) White?
(ii) Blue?
(iii) Red?

Solution:
Total marbles = 3 (blue) + 2 (white) + 4 (red) = 9

(i) White marbles = 2

P(white) = 2/9

(ii) Blue marbles = 3

P(blue)=3/9 = 1/3

(iii) Red marbles = 4

P(red) = 4/9

Check:

P(white) + P(blue) + P(red) = 2/9 + 3/9 + 4/9 = 9/9 = 1
