Exercise 14.1, 9

A box contains 5 red marbles, 8 white marbles and 4 green marbles. One marble is taken out of the box at random. What is the probability that the marble taken out will be

(i) red ?
(ii) white ?
(iii) not green?

Solution:

Total number of marbles = 5 red + 8 white + 4 green = 17 marbles.

(i) Probability of drawing a red marble:

The number of red marbles = 5, and total marbles = 17.

P(red) = 5/17

(ii) Probability of drawing a white marble:

The number of white marbles = 8, and total marbles = 17.

P(white) = 8/17

(iii) Probability of drawing a marble that is not green:

The number of marbles that are not green = 5 red + 8 white = 13 marbles, and total marbles = 17.

P(not green) = 13/17
