Example 2

A bag contains three balls: one red, one blue, and one yellow. All the balls are of the same size. Kritika randomly selects a ball from the bag without looking. Determine the probability that she selects:

(i) The yellow ball
(ii) The red ball
(iii) The blue ball

Solution:
In this case,

The total number of possible outcomes is 3 (since there are 3 balls).

(i) The number of favourable outcomes for selecting the yellow ball is 1.
Thus, the probability of selecting the yellow ball is:

P(Y) = 1/3

(ii) The number of favourable outcomes for selecting the red ball is 1.
Thus, the probability of selecting the red ball is:

P(R) = 1/3

(iii) The number of favourable outcomes for selecting the blue ball is 1.
Thus, the probability of selecting the blue ball is:

P(B) = 1/3

Therefore, the probability of selecting any one of the three balls (yellow, red, or blue) is 1/3
